The World’s Only White Whale

Migaloo is a real-life white humpback whale.

Apparently Moby Dick isn’t entirely fiction, since a white whale named Migaloo has been photographed off of Byron Bay in Australia. Is it just me, or does it seem like all the awesome stuff always happens in Australia?

Migaloo originally came on the scene in 1991, but has since been photographed at least 50 times traveling up and down the coast, migrating from Antarctica to Tropical North Queensland.

Scientists estimate that Migaloo is around 26-28 years-old, and may be alive for another 50 or so. He is one of three known white humpbacks in the world, but he is the only one that has no black spots or patterns at all.  The other humpbacks are also notoriously unfriendly, so it’s understandable why the world loves Migaloo so much, and have event taken steps to protect him under Australian law.  Unfortunately this means you will probably never get close enough to Migalooo to Instagram him, but it also means he is safe from any harpoon-wielding crazies trying to live out Moby Dick fantasies.
