Beautiful old photos of the New York Subway System.

Ask anyone who lives here, the most quintessentially New York thing about New York is the subway system. Nowhere else in the world is there a rail system as dirty, with as many delays, homeless people, subway singers, and fashion whores touching up their mascara on their 9 AM train rides of shame. It is very New York, and it is glorious.

The New York subway is one of the largest in the world, with 660 miles of track (even more if they ever finish the 2nd Ave line), 468 stations, and the impressive feat of transporting 5 million people per day.

The MTA may be one of the signs of the apocalypse, but the subway system itself is pretty awesome. Here are a few pics to remind you of how awesome it has always been.
