10 Flat Iron Hacks You Didn’t Know

Written by Allison

Try these flat iron hacks to make your hair look like a pro touched it.

Hair styling is so much easier when you can get a bunch of different looks out of one tool. It’s why the flat iron is our favorite hair styling gadget. You can get the perfectly straight look, obviously, and we’re sure everyone knows how to heat set braids by now. But, we’ve got a bunch more flat iron hacks up our sleeves for different looks you can create with the all powerful flat iron.

TLSScandiwave

Scandi Waves

For a cool girl wavy hair look that isn’t just loose curls, try scandi waves. These waves are created by making S shaped curves in your hair. Instead of twisting the flat iron to make the curve, you’re clamping it in place. Start near your roots and create a curve with the section of your hair. Then just keep scooting down the section making curves going back and forth. This is one of the easiest flat iron hacks, so definitely add it to your mental list.

TLSFlat IronCurl

Perfect Big Curls

Have you ever struggled with getting flat iron curls to actually look curly? The simple twisting method doesn’t always work for people. This is also a nifty flat iron hack if you just prefer the look of bigger curls. To achieve this look, wrap your hair around the flat iron before pulling the section through the plates. This takes an extra second to get used to, but it makes big curls achievable with a skinny flat iron.

TLScorkscrewcurls

Corkscrew Curls

If super tight corkscrew curls are your jam try this flat iron trick. All you need to do is take two sections of hair and twist them all the way down. Then, use your flat iron to lightly clamp the twist all the way down. This heat sets the twists. For the tightest curls make sure you leave the sections twisted together as they cool down. Then, once they’re cool, shake them out for big ’80s hair.

TLSsmoothstraight

Perfectly Smooth & Straight

For those who have a hard time getting super smooth looks with a flat iron, throw a boar bristle brush into the mix. It doesn’t necessarily need to be a round brush, but a round brush will give you the most grip. The boar bristles help to smooth out your hair and keep your hair flat as it moves through the iron. Just grip your section with the brush and start the flat iron just above it. Move the two together down your strands.

TLSfakeblowout

Faux Blowout

This technique is great for gals who love the bouncy look of a blowout but can’t get them as often as you’d like. If you have super thick hair, section off your hair before starting this look. To achieve the sleek blowout look, flat iron large sections of hair at an angle, starting around your ear. Most blowout looks aren’t totally voluminous near the roots, so starting this lower mimics that effect. This is definitely one of the better money-saving flat iron hacks.

Fix Flat Roots

For those of us with flat roots try this two second trick. It’s a great one to mix in with other styles to get a more well rounded effect. All you need to do to boost your roots is to create bends in your hair with the flat iron. Take a section of hair at your roots and loosely clamp as close as you feel comfortable. Then create a bend by twisting the flat iron down.

TLSflatironbangs

Straight (But Not Too Straight) Bangs

For gals with bangs or face framing layers, you’ll know all too well the overly straight look you get from flat irons. To help keep you from totally overdoing it, flat iron just the ends of your bangs mixed with another section of hair. Having more hair in the iron keeps it from getting too hot on just the bangs. Plus, it allows you to mesh longer layers with the rest of your hair.

TLSflatironclamp

No Clamp Marks Anywhere

Avoid clamp marks from your flat iron simply by not clamping down so hard. This is also super helpful in lessening the heat damage on your hair. You don’t have to squeeze the iron as tight as you can. It actually makes most styles more difficult to do because you’ll get stuck. Getting stuck or clamping down too hard where you start creates that tell tale mark. Just loosen it up a little to save your hair and your sanity.

TLSsealinchalk

Seal In Temporary Color

For festival aficionados who love a little hair chalk, make sure you seal in the color with your flat iron. Especially if you have dark hair, hair chalk can totally disappear on you. You’ll need to apply the chalk to wet hair, but once it’s totally dry seal in that color with your flat iron to have it last longer. This is yet another one of the best money-saving flat iron hacks.

Quickly Clean Your Plates

Did you know regular flat iron users should clean the flat iron plates at least once a month? Hair products, hair oil, and gunky stuff can collect on the plates making them less effective and dulling your hair. Cleaning a flat iron is super easy – you just need a soft cloth, some cotton balls, warm water and rubbing alcohol. Start off by giving your cold plates a once over with the cotton balls and rubbing alcohol. This should take off the majority of the gunk. Then, finish up by rubbing the plates with a warm, damp soft cloth to remove any leftover residue. Let it dry and you’re good to go!
