Chances are, if you live anywhere except Georgia or South Carolina, you have never even heard of Daufuskie Island. Even though it has two resorts for tourists and was referenced in a Jimmy Buffet song, Daufuskie Island is a little-known vacation destination right in the heart of the South.
1. Daufuskie Island is a “sea island” situated between Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia.
2. The total surface space of Daufuskie is 8 square miles. That is roughly the size of Rihanna’s forehead.
3. The island has a population of only 400+ full-time residents. I think I have more than 400 residents in my apartment building.
4. Until recent times, most of the people on the island were Gullah inhabitants, or people descended from freed slaves.
5. There are no bridges to Daufuskie. All transportation comes by boat. You have to wonder if teenagers beg their parents for jetski’s for their sweet 16’s.
6. Daufuskie has no middle or high school; children in those grades are ferried to Hilton Head, a 1.5 hour ride each way, every day. Also, since they are on a ferry, chances are they don’t get cell reception and can’t even text!
7. Daufuskie Island features two historic lighthouses named Bloody Point Lighthouse, and Haig Point Lighthouse, both built in the 1800’s.
If you are looking for some southern culture, a golfing getaway, or to learn about the history of slave descendants, Daufuskie Island is only a hop, skip, and a ferry ride away.
