Name This Animal: Win 20 Bucks

Written by Bryce

Someone texted me this photo of a bunch of girls with a ridiculously cute creature and a selfie stick. Now I need to know what animal this is and where I can take a selfie with him or one of his friends.

I will seriously send you $20 via Paypal if you’re the first person to:

1) Accurately name this animal by species. Brownie points for knowing the latin name, too.

2) Tell me where the heck I can find one in NYC (or nearby) that I’m allowed to take a photo with.

I’m not kidding.

  • It’s a quokka! Scientific name: Setonix brachyurus. They are from Australia. I can’t seem to find anywhere that you can find one near New York.

  • Hmm. I thought it was a nutria, scientific name Myocastor coypus. Those little things that look sort of like a beaver without a tail, are all over the place down here in the south…they run around the kudzu and river banks and little ponds. So if you can find a place like that outside NYC maybe they live up there too but at this time of year I highly doubt you’d see one in your area. As for the picture you posted – are you sure it’s not a stuffed animal? It looks kinda fake. Cute though! =)
