MSG: Scarier Than You Think

“Did I just eat? I don’t remember. I’m still hungry!” You probably find yourself saying that sometimes. That Chinese take-out was more than enough to fill that empty belly of yours, so why the sudden rush of hunger? That Chinese take-out you just ate most likely was packed with MSG. What is MSG? It’s not as complicated as it sounds. MSG stands for Monosodium Glutamate. Processed MSG enhances the flavor of most of the food we eat. You’ve most likely heard all about MSG ,and the controversy about whether it’s dangerous or not. Is MSG something you should stay away from? I think so.

Monosodium Glutamate is said by some to do a bit more than just innocently enhance flavor, like potentially cause a pretty lengthy list of health problems including vomiting, hives, migraines, depression, seizures, skin rashes, gall bladder attacks, diarrhea (yuck), and an urge to binge. Yeah, that’s right! Binge! Why would anyone want to each food with MSG if it does such harm to you? Unfortunately, most people are pretty ignorant to the fact there is MSG in their food. This is because some food manufactures refuse the right for citizens to know; filing this harmful “drug” under “secret ingredients”, that’s not included on the label. Sometimes it’s on the label, but discreetly named as something you’ve seen lots of times on your most favorite snacks. Names like: Artificial and Natural Flavors, textured protein, glutamate, yeast extract, mono-potassium, and many more names most people don’t know the meaning to. Well, you do now!

Maybe some of you’re most favored everyday foods have high doses of MSG. Ranch dressing, hot dogs, BBQ meats, chili, some Chinese food, processed deli meat, French onion dip, and a lot more contains MSG! Have you ever eaten some of these foods and had a banging headache shortly after? Needed to go to a quiet, dark room to feel better? You’ve most likely eaten something packed with Monosodium Glutamate.

It’s a powerful thing to be knowledgeable to what you’re eating, especially if you have kids. Don’t stand for the quick meals, or the lazy way out. We’re all better than that. You’ll be surprised at what you will find out if you do a little research. Tell your friends, your spouse, your neighbor. Anyone! Ignite the spunky activist inside of you, and take a stand against MSG!
