Love Locks: Do we love being in love, or lie our asses off?

Would you lock your love down?

The Brooklyn Bridge is slowly becoming a testament to either the evolution of urban artistic methods to declaring your love, or the delusion of committed couples everywhere. I am not sure which side of the bridge I fall on. But I am definitely intrigued by the idea of a love lock.

Love Lock : Noun, A lock accessible either by combination or key that is inscribed or marked with the names of two committed lovers and then placed somewhere for the world to see as a symbol of love and devotion. The idea of a love lock comes from the Italian movie Tre Metri Sopra il Cielo wherein a couple places their love lock on a bridge and then throws the key into the water below.

The Brooklyn Bridge (specifically the 1st observation deck on the Manhattan side) is slowly being overtaken by love locks. Is this a cheesy, unrealistic idea or a romantic expression of love?

According to the book of Gary, love locks are a good thing. If all it took was a pair of bolt cutters to release yourself from someone I think the world, Maria Shriver, and Tiger Wood’s ex-wife ( I am not even going to try and pronounce that Nordic Bullsh*t would be much better off. I think that marriage does a good enough job of locking you to someone, so if you really want to show your commitment, go ahead and sign those papers, merge your credit, buy a house together, have some kids, and then 10 years down the line WISH it had been as simple as inserting a key into a mechanism.

I am a full supporter of spending as much of your life in love as possible. I am 100% behind the idea of a building history together and declaring your love.

But I am also a realist and have found myself quite fond of opt-out clauses in contracts–just ask anyone who has ever asked me to do porn.

A love lock may endure the test of time. Your commitment may not. But either way it might be nice to have something to remember fondly and visit, whether your relationship was as solid as that lock on the Brooklyn Bridge or as fleeting as the running water below it.
