California has added LGBT rights to its public school curriculum.

LGBT history was just approved by California’s Board of Education for upcoming curriculum.

Whenever I talk about gay rights with my friends, I talk about how lucky we are to be living in a time of so much change, when the actions of the gays and lesbians that came before us are really bearing fruit and changing our society. The Board of Education of California recently decided to add parts of the LGBT history and civil rights movement to the curriculum of public schools, and I have to say I couldn’t be happier about it.

The issue LGBT citizens have always dealt with is the fact that we are treated like second class citizens, so the fact that the state of California is acknowledging our struggle is a huge step in the right direction. The idea was first floated years ago, and met with some resistance, however the recent vote was unanimous.

“History is not just ‘who was king or queen when’,” says state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, “ The new curriculum is “not only acknowledging diversity, but celebrating our diversity as a strength.”

LGBT issues will be introduced in second grade, but the content will change depending on what is age appropriate. It will cover things like the struggle for equality, the right to marry, and then eventually gay rights. I say it a lot, and I will say it again, we are lucky to be living in a time where something like this is not only possible, but happening.
