Do Touristy things upfront. Nobody likes those anal-retentive people that plan their trips out down to the second, but everyone wants to explore a little of the culture in any new place. Schedule the touristy events in the beginning of your trip so you can get them out of the way, and spend the rest of your time basking in the fact that you have nothing to do except enjoy yourself.

Study the language beforehand, and find a language partner when you get there. I don’t exactly know how this is accomplished, I am assuming Craigslist (just carry a knife). But if you only hang with Americans, you will have a completely different experience than if you immerse yourself in the culture. Language partners are a great way to meet other locals, which will lead to lots of off-the-beaten-path activities that tourists may never know about.

Journal. When you are soaking up the culture and experience of another country, keeping track of all the sights and sounds is a great way to remember your trip. I am not saying you have to write down everything you do, or every swarthy Italian you blow, but even if you just write down random words, you will immediately be transported back to that time and place. For instance, I took a five day bus trip once, and just wrote down words like: Popcorn, feet, grimy windows, a crying stripper, and greasy hair. Whenever I read those lines I am immediately taken back to the experience, without any lengthy diatribe or flowery language.

Any time you travel abroad, the ultimate goal is just to enjoy yourself. These three tips will help you do that, while having a significant cultural experience at the same time.
