Swimsuits for breast cancer survivors.

Finnish fashion designers have created a line of swimsuits specifically for women who have survived breast cancer.

We always talk about breast cancer, and the toll it takes on the lives, families, and bodies of afflicted women, especially when they undergo single or double mastectomies. What we don’t always talk about are the daily struggles, with things as simple as shopping for bathing suits when you only have one breast. A Finnish breast cancer survivor named Elina Haltunnen decided to do something about that, having gone through a mastectomy of her own. She joined forces with an art duo Tärähtäneet ämmät (translated as ‘nutty tarts’) to create the Monokini 2.0 swimwear range. After the product photos appeared online, breast cancer survivors from all over contacted them, and they did a photo spread of the women wearing the monokinis proudly.

The photos will be shown in Norway, Finland, and Sweden, and the team is currently crowdfunding to expand the Monokini project.

From what I know, shopping for bathing suits isn’t really fun for anyone, so its awesome to see that someone is stepping up and doing something to encourage breast cancer survivors to be a little more comfortable in their own skin.
