BEAUTY

Intervention

Written by Aliza

Recently I was caught in an act so appaling, so horrid and shocking, that part of me is reluctant to admit it. However, I trust you, dear readers, to be compassionate and understanding when I describe how my faux-pas went down:

Scene: vanity counter in the bathroom at Greenwich Village restaurant

Me: opening my eyeshadow compact and dipping my index finger into the silky powder in preparation for a quick reapplication.

Female stranger next to me: “STOP! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING!”

Me: Drops eyeshadow, stares at mauve-tinted finger, gazes into mirror and, in a moment, completely reevaluates entire life’s meaning.

I, the beauty-and-fashion junkie, have been committing one of the most serious cardinal beauty sins my entire life: application without instrument. Excuses were out of the question now, I needed to mature my makeup.  Never again would I be caught finger-deep in a shadow, blush, or gloss again!

In my search for the best and most convenient tools, I came across Cat Cosmetic’s Open Sesameow Brush Set. Not only does this set open and fan out to present each brush as if as an offering from God, but it comes with an instruction card that details (for us former tool-o-phobes) how and when to use each brush.

The set includes a powder brush and a blush brush (who knew they were different things?), a blending brush, a crease brush, a precision brush, wet liner and dry liner brushes, a smoker brush, and a spooly brush for eyebrows/lashes. The set itself is so compact that it can fit in the tiniest of bags and the mirror inside means I don’t have to carry an extra one around.

Interestingly enough, the maker of this genius brush set is none other than Catherine Hickland whom you might recognize from starring in countless soap operas. Her previous profession as a makeup artist, however, is what inspired her successful foray into the beauty industry. You can find the Open Sesameow Brush Set and an amazing selection of cosmetics at CatCosmetics.com.

I would like to put up a “missed connections” post on Craigslist so that I could, on the off chance, find that woman from Saturday night and thank her for changing my life. Maybe she was my guardian angel. Maybe she was just a good samariatn. Maybe she was something really cool that I don’t even know about. Well, stranger, if you’re reading this: I’ve been makeup-finger free for 2 days and counting.
