Ironic Twist: Google Launches Designer Collection…But, Like Emperor, Has No Clothes

Written by Lisa

Boy, if I had a nickel for every time I’ve searched for something on the Internet and thought, “This search engine is such a huge part of my life! I wish there was some way to commemorate Google physically on my person that wouldn’t simultaneously force me to compromise my high sense of fashion…,” I certainly wouldn’t be scrambling to come up with enough freelance gigs every month to cover my rent.

But then – just like that – my prayers were answered!

According to a post in the Official Google Blog on Friday, Google has finally debuted three pieces from its favorite designers in the 2009 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. The program, which supports up-and-coming designers, asked participants to create original items inspired by Google. And now three of these items are available for purchase in Google’s Online Store. But! They are only available for a limited time! So…tarry not.

From the House of Waris, there’s a search-inspired magnifying diamond pendant. According to official Google schtuff, designer Waris Ahluwalia says, “Search is at the heart of everything Google does.” And, for $200, you can wear this pendant — which was crafted in both Down and Dirty Brooklyn and on “the isle of Manhattan” – to remind yourself of the weighty juxtaposition and what it says about, you know, society and stuff as we all carry out searches in our own lives – both online and off.

It also doubles as a bottle opener in a pinch.

But that’s only the beginning!

Next we have Gary Graham…who not only designed a 100% cotton, hand-silk-screened t-shirt that takes its inspiration from the Google map point and search results graphics, but who *also* “reinterpreted the map point – a point of destination — as a global symbol for where we are and where we’re going by enlarging the map point, making it look ‘worn’ away, and placing it over a backdrop of search results for the word ‘Peace.’”

I challenge you to come up with a better way to spend $85 and make such a profound existential statement! You can’t, right? It’s impossible. In fact, I, for one, give up. No more snarky blogging from me. Instead, I’m going to get a Ladies’ medium and rest on my laurels for all of eternity.

And, last but not least, Ohne Titel has an oversize knit scarf in Google’s signature colors…that simultaneously captures and regurgitates the essence of 1985. According to another official Google blurb, the “multi-yarn, intarsia hand-knit scarf incorporating silk bias trim with wool and nylon yarn” was “inspired by Google’s multi-functionality and diversity” and “is designed to be worn in several ways.”

So…let me be clear: You’re not paying for a single $300 scarf. You’re really getting, like, ten $30 ones. It’s High Fashion meets coupon-clipping, Good-Housekeeping-reading, Oprah-watching, stay-at-home Midwestern Mom.

Now if only there was a search engine out there that could help me decide which one to wear in the morning…
