DIY Ocean Hair Spray With Just Three Ingredients

Written by Allison

Try this easy DIY ocean hair spray to get the beachiest waves of your life.

It’s finally summer! We’re here for all the sundresses, loose wavy hair, and bronzer we can handle. If your plans don’t involve a beach vacation you can at least pretend with a beachy DIY. Faking fresh from the ocean hair is easier to craft than you’d think and will easily cost you less than a store bought salt spray. It’s great for adding instant volume, too.

DIY ocean hair spray couldn’t be easier to make it’s just mixing three ingredients warm water, sea salt, and an oil in a spray bottle.

Fill your spray bottle with warm water about half way up. Because this is a DIY smaller batches are better for using up before things get funky. In the water swirl one tablespoon each of sea salt and a liquid oil of your choice, we went for hydrating olive oil.

If you want to customize your ocean hair spray all you need to do is change up the amount of salt or oil. The more oil you add the more you’ll get that damp literally in the ocean look. If you want a crunchier look with more hold, add extra salt. Don’t get too crazy though, we don’t suggest going over two tablespoons of either in one cup of water.

You can also add scent with a drop or two of your favorite essential oil. Beware though because they can be very strong and some are photo reactive (i.e. they could lighten your hair in the sun). Try it on long hair, cute bob hairstyles, or just about any other hair craving a dose of texture.

Before adding in our DIY ocean hair spray things look a bit lackluster.

Before using make sure to shake your bottle to disperse the oil throughout the mixture.

Spritz in and scrunch with your hand at the same time.

The more help your hair needs in the wave department the more product you’ll need. We also find that scrunching and holding helps to keep waves around longer.

You’ll be left with pretty ocean hair in no time flat! The whole look pairs nicely with this DIY matte nail polish, if you ask us.
