Darlingly Darius

Written by RachelR

As you might be able to tell from my bio pic, I have ferociously long hair and it’s a pain to find a glam up-do that will keep shape all night until the last candid picture.

Lucky for the Lux Spot (and me!), the oh-so-fabulous Ryan Darius Nickulas, owner of the Ryan Darius Salon on W12th, has given some hair styling tips that not only will last when dashing through the snow, but may nab you the second glance at the office holiday party this year.

  • What are your best holiday hair tips for the season?

Use hair jewelry to take your look from day to night and to set you apart from the crowd at your next holiday party. If you’re a girl at the office or on the go, who rocks a ponytail 90% of the time, keeping some bold hair accessories in your purse can turn your pony from drab to fab. Adding a shiny headband, sheik hair pin, or vintage hair comb will instantly update your style and add holiday flair to your outfit.

  • What can we do if we want to change up our hair this winter but aren’t fully ready to commit to a drastic style change?

Not a problem. Pop in a custom clip-in-bang and rock a new style for a night or longer. Or for the more daring, use custom clip in extensions to add volume and depth to you locks. Stop into Ryan Darius salon to get the perfect color match and browse the selection of headbands to show off your new style.

  • What’s the biggest mistakes that girls make [with their hair] before a night out?

Before a big night out, a girl can spend hours in front of the mirror styling her look. But we have all seen the girl who forgot the back of her head. It is essential that you invest as much time in the back as you do in the front. Otherwise, the last look that the hottie you’ve been chatting it up with will get, is the giant bald spot in the back of your head. Make sure to carry a small mirror in your purse so you can check up your look from all angles when you hit the ladies room.

  • What is the true-blue, stay-all-night hair-do for a night out?

Most women want to look glam all night long, even after the lights come up or the sun rises (which ever comes first!) One sure fire way to accomplish this is with a savvy up-do. This glamorous look works for women with all types of hair regardless of color, texture, or style. There are many ways to accomplish this look, but if you are trying this on your own use these tips to create your up-do. Spray your hair with a light hairspray and comb through. Section your top, sides, and back into quarters. Starting in the back, tease for staying power, and work your way through the other sections. Gather the back section of hair into a ponytail with an elastic band. Taking pieces (sloppy or neat, depending on the look you want) pin the hair up, down, and all around. Take the two sides and wrap them around the ponytail, covering the elastic band with hair. Create a side sweep bang with the top section or tease for extra height. The final touch is all yours!

  • So I must know, how can I wear a headband and look much more Blair Waldorf, and much less like my 5-year-old cousin?

When creating a sexy look with a headband, don’t snatch your hair back like you’re about ready to wash your face. Again, teasing can be your best friend. Tease the hair around the crown of your head up and back…and using a little spray doesn’t hurt either. Leaving bangs or a few strands out in the front, place the headband on your head like a crown. Thinner headbands can be worn closer to the forehead (and look stunning with jewels) and thicker bands should be worn back a little further.
