A Beer a Day Keeps the Osteoporosis Away

Written by Maura

I am a beer girl. I am not the one you see sitting in the bar sipping on a fancy mixed drink with umbrellas and enough fruit to fit on the Chiquita banana lady’s head, nor am I the badass sipping a stiff whiskey drink (Ashley, not to mention any names). I am perfectly content with my Blue Moon or Bud Light, and lucky me because apparently it is going to pay off in the long run, with strong bones. A recent Spanish study claims that women who are regular beer drinkers have stronger bones and are more likely to avoid the effects of osteoporosis. Finally, I have a legit excuse for boozing!

In all seriousness osteoporosis is a real big problem for women. Out of the 10 million Americans estimated to have osteoporosis, 8 million of them are women according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation. Apparently the silicon in beer is what helps the bones stay stronger and prevents thinning that can lead to fracture. Maybe that’s why I’ve never broken a bone..who knew? The research also shows that light(less than a pint a day) beer drinkers have the same positive effects as moderate beer drinkers so have a beer every once in a while, it does the body good.
