10 Foods That Digest Quickly

Written by andy

Our top 10 list of foods that digest quickly.

It’s always nice to have a snack that goes down easily. When you need to grab something quick, you don’t want a food that will spend a lot of time sitting in your stomach. If you’re looking for an easy bite to eat, here are some of the fastest-digesting foods for you:

  1. Cooked Veggies — If you boil, steam, or fry pretty much any vegetable, you’ll find that they digest quite quickly. After all, veggies are primarily fiber, minerals, and vitamins, with very little fat or protein to slow down the digestion rate. Eating a veggie-heavy meal will usually leave you with an empty stomach in no time!
  2. Bananas –– Bananas are a wonderful food to eat when you need energy in a hurry. They are easy on your digestive system, packed with calories, potassium, fiber, and other nutrients, but are quickly digested by your stomach and intestines.
  3. Salmon –– While salmon does contain fatty acids and protein, it’s very easy on your digestive system. Unless you are allergic to seafood or fish, you should have no problem eating this delicious, high protein food!
  4. Rice –– White rice, in particular, is VERY easy on your digestive system. Brown rice contains a bit more fiber and thus takes longer for you to digest, but white rice (which has almost no fiber) is processed and digested in a very short amount of time. It’s why you always feel hungry shortly after eating white rice.
  5. Bread –– Bread (white, brown, and even whole wheat) is easy on your digestive system, provided you aren’t sensitive or intolerant to gluten. The fact that most bread is very low in fiber means that it’s processed and turned into glucose quickly. It’s one of the best foods to eat when you have an upset stomach!

  1. Soup –– As long as you stick with broth and not creamy soups or stews, you’ll find that your meals digest quite quickly. The fact that soup is made almost entirely of cooked vegetables and water makes it very easy on your digestive system, and though it’s filling right away, it will be out of your stomach in no time.
  2. Oatmeal –– The fact that the oats are cooked means that they have already been partially broken down. When you eat oatmeal (free of sugar and butter), your body can easily digest the oats. They take a bit longer than some of the other foods on the list, but you’ll find that oatmeal is still VERY easy on your digestive system.
  3. Eggs –– Eggs hardly take any time to digest, but they give your body a pretty steady flow of protein, minerals, and nutrients. You’ll love the effect eggs have on your body, and you’ll see marked health improvements thanks to the eggs in your diet. The yolk is the hardest part of the egg to digest, so eat more egg whites if you want to speed up digestion.
  4. Watermelon –– Watermelon is made of primarily water, with just a bit of fiber, some antioxidants, and natural sugar to make the fruit as delicious as it is. Your body can digest watermelon in a matter of minutes!
  5.  Oranges — The beauty of oranges is that they’re loaded with Vitamin C, antioxidants, fiber, and nutrients. But they digest incredibly quickly despite the healthy fiber. You won’t have to worry about bloating after eating an orange, which is why so many runners eat them after a marathon!
